Actually, the flamingo one is true. They have the pinkish color because of all the shrimp they eat.
The Duncun yo-yo company liked to spread that as publicity. Yo-yos existed in ancient Greece as a toy, as well as in Egypt (again, as a toy). What about a yo-yo could make it a weapon that's more effective than say... a rock? Throw a yo-yo and miss it comes back I suppose. Or, throw a rock and miss, then throw the other rock you have ready to go.
